“Ci sono due cose infinite:
l’universo e la stupidità umana; ma non sono sicuro sull’universo”
Solitamente, le innumerevoli
frasi che vengono riportate indicando come autore Einstein riportano sempre la
parola “infinito” o “universo”.
Non vi sono scritti autografati
da Einstein, interviste o registrazioni che confermano che abbia pronunciato
tale frase che viene, comunque, ripresa in varie forme da numerosi siti senza
che questi ne abbiano appurato la veridicità e la provenienza.
La prima volta che la frase è
stata riportata fu iscritta nel libro di Frederick S. Perls, “Ego, Hunger and
Aggression: a Revision of Freud’s Theory and Method”, pubblicato nel 1947.
A pagina 111 del volume appare la
seguente asserzione:
“Furthermore, this
impatient, greedy attitude is responsible more than anything else for the
excessive stupidity we find in the world. Just as such people have no patience
to chew up real food, so they do not take sufficient time to “chew up” mental
food.
As modern times
promote hasty eating to a large extent, it is not surprising to learn that a great astronomer said: “Two things are
infinite, as far as we know – the universe and human stupidity.” To-day we
know that this statement is not quite correct. Einstein
has proved that the universe is limited.”
Come si vede, la frase è
attribuita genericamente “ad un grande astronomo” e Einstein, come tutto
sanno, era un fisico, non certo un astronomo.
Se la frase fosse stata
pronunciata da Einsten stesso, l’autore non avrebbe certo omesso la fonte,
vista la caratura del personaggio.
Inoltre, procedendo con la
lettura, si evidenzia che Einstein stesso aveva già verificato che l’universo è
finito, non certo infinito, negando , così, la validità della frase precedente.
In seguito, dopo la morte di
Einsten (avvenuta nel 1955), Perls ritornò sull’argomento almeno due altre
volte: la prima nel 1969, nel libro “Gestalt
Therapy Verbatim” indicando chiaramente che la frase gli era stata detta
direttamente da Einstein (pg. 33):
As Albert Einstein
once said to me: “Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity.”
But what is much more widespread than the actual stupidity is the playing
stupid, turning off your ear, not listening, not seeing.
La frase nell’edizione del 1969, è stata modificata (“Two things are
infinite: the universe and human stupidity.” invece di “Two things are
infinite, as far as we know – the
universe and human stupidity.”- togliendo, quindi, as far as we know).
Sempre nel 1969, lo stesso Perls pubblicò un altro libro, intitolato “In and Out the Garbage
Pail” dove l’autore racconta che “I spent one afternoon with Albert
Einstein: unpretentiousness, warmth, some false political predictions.(…) I
still love to quote a statement of his: “Two things are infinite, the universe
and human stupidity, and I am not yet completely sure about the universe.”
Questa, con l’aggiunta di “and
I am not yet completely sure about the universe”, assente nelle precedenti versioni,
è la più utilizzata in rete.
Da notare la furba (non si sa
se voluta o no) aggiunta della seconda proposizione, quella che sicuramente dà
più effetto a tutta la frase.
Abbiamo, dunque, tre frasi attribuite allo stesso Einstein (ma
da questi mai confermate):
1° versione (1947): “Two things are infinite, as far as we know – the
universe and human stupidity.”
2° versione (1969): “Two things are infinite: the universe and human
stupidity.”
3° versione (1969): “Two
things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I am not yet
completely sure about the universe.”
Quale sia quella esatta non è
chiaro, così come non è chiaro se lo scienziato (e non, come scritto da Perls
nella prima stesura, “un grande astronomo”) l’abbia effettivamente pronunciata
oppure no.
